What Is Micro-Blogging?
Blogging has become a great way for people who are inexperienced with web development, programming, and maintaining a web server to get their information out to readers. Over the last few years, blogging has become an incredibly popular way for people to share their interests with other readers on the internet. Work on Twitter actually began in March of 2006, when founder, Jack Dorsey, published the very first message. Twitter quickly took off from there, being featured in festivals such as SXSW (South by SouthWest) when usage numbers tripled overnight. From there, Twitter has even been utilized by astronauts in outer space, with messages being posted from the International Space Station by T.J. Creamer in January of 2010.
Twitter Startup Funding And Financial History
CEO, and founder, John Dorsey had to go through two rounds of venture capital funding when starting up the company. In October of 2008 Dorsey stepped down as CEO, in favor of a chairman position, relinquishing the job duties to Evan Williams. Since that time, Williams has also stepped down as CEO, allowing Dick Costolo to step up into the position around October of 2010.
Twitter’s Traffic History And Statistics
In the early days of the micro-blogging platform, it was easy to see that Twitter was going to be a big hit, especially in the United States. In the US at the time, many mobile phone and SMS users would utilize short codes in their text messages to get them out quicker, which is where “twttr” and Twitter got their name. The short 140 character codes made it easy for everyone to use the service, and quickly get out what they had to say. After the SXSW unveiling, messages increased from 20,000 per day to 60,000 per day, and it has grown since. It is estimated that Twitter now receives an average of 30 million visitors per day.
Twitters Ideal Target Audience And Market Information
According to Quantcast, Twitter is reaching out to a majority of male (55%) visitors, ranging in age groups from 13-49 with the largest number of them being between 13-34 years of age. Quantcast reports that a majority of their users are either not in college, or are preparing for college, bringing in an average of $30,000 per year.
Alexa.com, on the other hand, ranks Twitter as the #7th most visited site in the United States, and the #9th most visited site around the world, reaching out to nearly 10% of the worlds population every day. Alexa reports a larger female usage, with visitors in between the ages of 24-44, opposed to Quantcasts traffic estimations. Alexa also reports that Twitter receives an average of 3.6 unique page views every day, and visitors spend roughly 7 minutes on the site each time they visit.
What Twitter Offers To Their Members
Twitter has done away with the requirement of technical knowledge, or having to sit down for long periods of time to write out a blog post on your favorite topics, in favor of being able to put out quick messages and get them easily connected with others who are also interested in the topic. This makes for an incredibly low learning curve and small barrier to entry than other, traditional blogging platforms such as Wordpress and Blogger.
Twitter’s Competition Analysis And Outlook
As it stands right now, there are very few microblogging platforms on the market that have the clout to compete with Twitter. A few have tried to make their stand, but as Twitter was so innovative in their approach to the concept of micro-blogging, it will be hard for other competitors to make their own mark on the internet world. Some prospects, such as Tumblr, and even Facebook’s micro-blogging platform are trying to make their way into the market, without receiving near the publicity that Twitter received when it was in its launching phases.
